UPCOMING AREA EVENTS:

Friday, May 16, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.: SMU Symposium with Isabel Wilkerson & Ta-Nehisi Coates, in the Pavilion of the Annette Caldwell Simmons Hall, 3101 University Boulevard on the SMU campus. The symposium, “Literature for Real: Journalism, the American Canon, and the Evolving American South,” will include keynote speaker Farah Jasmine Griffin, professor of English/Comparative Literature/African American Studies, Columbia University, and author of Who Set You Flowin’? and Harlem Nocturne.  While writing for The New York Times, Isabel Wilkerson became the first African-American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize in journalism and the first African-American, male or female, to win the Pulitzer for individual reporting. Her award-winning book, The Warmth of Other Suns, is a definitive history of the Great Migration of African-Americans from the rural South to urban centers in the North and West.

Inkwell Poetry Slam: Last Sundays at  Music Factory, 3008 E Pioneer Pkwy, Arlington, TX 76010. Slam Master: Chris Key

Dallas Poetry Slam: WS sponsors a monthly feature on third Fridays at DPS from September to May. They have weekly (on Friday) events as well at @ Heroes, 7402 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231. 8pm. $5. Click on their website for more info. Slam Master: Alexandra Marie.

Pandora’s Box: Eclectic! Third Mondays in The Margo Jones at Fair Park. 8 pm. Christopher Soden and Paul Konieki are among the directors of this scene. Not an open mic. Click on the FB page to see the latest.

University of Texas at Dallas, Southern Methodist University, University of North Texas also have excellent reading series and other presentations. The SMU Lit Fest is usually every March.
